The timer above
Five minutes is 300 seconds, and that is what loads by default because it is the length people ask for most often. Every other length below opens its own page with the number already set, so there is no typing at all: the page loads, you press start.
Every length here
- Seconds: 10, 15, 20, 30 and 90 seconds.
- Short minutes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 minutes.
- Longer: 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 45 and 50 minutes.
- Hours: 1 hour and 2 hours.
What the common lengths are for
Most people arrive with a length already in mind, and the same handful come up again and again.
| Length | Seconds | What it is usually |
|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | 30 | Handwashing, and one quadrant of a toothbrush |
| 3 minutes | 180 | A boxing round, and the classic soft-boiled egg |
| 10 minutes | 600 | A short break, and a pot of tea left to steep |
| 25 minutes | 1,500 | A pomodoro work block |
| 45 minutes | 2,700 | Roughly one school period |
| 90 minutes | 5,400 | A full sleep cycle, and a football match |
The lengths that divide an hour
If you are stacking repeats, some numbers land neatly on the hour and some never do. One, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30 minutes all divide 60 exactly – twenty minutes run three times is an hour, twelve five times, four fifteen times. Twenty-five does not: two pomodoros are 50 minutes, and three overrun the hour by a quarter of it. Forty-five goes into three hours, not one.
Accuracy, and when not to trust it
The clock runs against your system clock, not against a counter that a sleeping tab can stall, so a backgrounded tab still lands on zero at the right moment. The sound is the weak part: a phone that puts itself to sleep may never play it. Do not lean on this for anything where missing the alarm matters – medication, an exam, a step in cooking that burns.
