25 Minute Timer

Twenty-five minutes, counting down above. It is 1,500 seconds and the working half of a pomodoro: twenty-five on, five off, which is why two of them fit an hour.

25:00

Nothing plays until you press start.

The count runs against your device clock, so a tab left in the background still lands on time. The sound is the weak part: a phone that has put itself to sleep may never play it. Do not lean on this, or on any browser timer, where a missed alarm costs you something - medication, an exam, a step in cooking that burns.

Why 25 and not 30

Twenty-five minutes is 1,500 seconds, and it is the one odd-looking block length that almost everybody recognises, because the pomodoro technique built its cycle on it. Work for 25, break for 5, and the pair comes to a round 30 minutes. Two pairs fill an hour. Four pairs come to exactly 120 minutes, which is where the method tells you to take a longer break.

Running the cycle on this site

  1. Start the 25 above and work on one thing until it sounds.
  2. Switch to the 5 minute timer for the short break.
  3. Repeat four times, then take a longer break on the 15 minute timer.

Other things that fit 25

The length is not only for focus work. It suits a practice session, a sprint through an inbox, a marking pile, or a workout where you want a hard stop. If you want the pair to land on the half hour instead of the block, the 30 minute timer is the one to set.
